The Emerald Circle – a documentary on the largest green space in Mumbai, India.
Jui Chawan as a twelve year old student of Balmohan Vidyamandir situated at Shivaji Park learnt digital film making at her school. Her early memories of Shivaji Park include the evenings spent with her Grandparents on the swings and slides. The short Film “The Emerald Circle” translates this earnest wish of a twelve year old that the Park be preserved and protected so that not only is the City’s lung space retained but the homes of the chirping sparrows, the green parakeets and the encircling kites on the trees, in the Park, remain undisturbed.
Shivaji Park is the largest open space in Mumbai, a metropolis with a population which is one of the largest in the world. The documentary seeks to present the Park in its different hues while subtly making the viewers, conscious of protecting this community and neighborhood asset from urban decay and neglect.
This Film was screened at the 18th International Children’s Film Festival, India held at Hyderabad from November 14, 2013 to November 20, 2013 in the specially curated category “Children World” (Non Competitive Section) and also selected for screening at Soeul South Korea at its International Youth Festival.

“Metamorphosis – my story” – a story of the day which changed the life of a “Road” in the leafy environs of Shivaji Park, Mumbai.
Dr. M. B. Raut Marg, a Road made of asphalt, is the Protagonist of this Short Film. The Road, meanders around the Shivaji Park area with its long body across Residential Buildings, Stores, Schools, Clubs on its way. It goes past these premises crossing lanes, its periphery lined with trees on either side, street markers, speed breakers, and overflowing bins. The Road which has suffered neglect, is deformed due to the digging of trenches by utilities, seepage of water and lack of cleanliness and hygiene.
One day, the Dr. M. B. Raut Road is pleasantly surprised, when a School, Balmohan Vidyamandir situated on its flanks organizes the “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan”. Dr. M. B. Raut Road being a Senior Citizen and having suffered the brunt, abuse and neglect for many years, happily notices little children cleaning it and actually taking care of it. It is pleased to see small hands take care of the unclean surroundings which had pushed the Road’s heart to grief.
However, it is not a cleanliness drive which occurs on that day. Dr. M. B. Raut Road gets a great sense of satisfaction and contentment when the Road realizes that the “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” scheduled for a day was not a programme for that particular day but had indeed instilled a deep sense of commitment to cleanliness in the school children due to something and some action by a child a few days later ……………..…
Celebration of specific days with the certain objective, does not end with the celebrations, but is merely a beginning……………… in this case, of sensitizing young children to the advantages of cleanliness, to hone it as a life skill.
